St Matthews

St Matthew's Church on Grenville Street was consecrated in May 1858. Our services take place on:

Sundays

  • 9.30 am a traditional Holy Communion Service
  • 11.15 am a less formal service with Holy Communion on alternate weeks(at this service we have children's activities)
  •
  • Except for the first Sunday of every month when a SINGLE SERVICE takes place at
  • 10.30 am Holy Communion with children's activites

Wednesdays

10 am Said Communion

At the back of church we have a social area which was created when we lost the use of the school hall (the old Victorian school was demolished and a new school built down the road). Refreshments between the services are served here, from 10.40 to 11.10 when there are two services; and after the service on the first Sunday of the month.

Each Saturday morning the church is open from 10.00am until 11.30am when refreshmets are available. This Saturday morning session is popular with those who want to drop in and catch up with folk informally over a cuppa, or who want to come and arrange a christening or a wedding. Many people who are "just passing" see the church open on Saturday mornings and take the opportunity to pop in and look round.

On Mondays - Fridays during the morning the social area is also used by a child-minders' group who gather together and let the children play in safety. If you would like to know more about this group for your child, please contact us.

St Matthew's also houses school services and special events such as concerts. The Stockport Silver Band uses the church for rehearsals and often gives concerts here.

On Monday evenings during school term times we also have a Church Lads' and Church Girls' Brigade. We can supply more details if you would like to know more about the Brigade and exactly which age-group meets when.

Baptisms usually take place here on the second Sunday of the month - please contact the clergy for more details before you make any decisions.  Similarly, weddings and funerals are usually by arrangement through the clergy or, in the case of funerals, via the Funeral Director.
