(5 mins)

1i.     Can you think of any times your life has been in turmoil or when you have been fearful about what might happen?

1ii.    Were you a Christian at the time?

If yes, in what ways did that make a difference to how you                 felt and acted in that situation?

If no, would it have made a difference if you had been?

(5 mins)

2i.     What do you think would have happened if the disciples had not woken Jesus?

Were the disciples right to be scared?

In what ways did they lack faith?

2ii.    Can you think of other passages which promise that God will protect us from harm?

Here’s some…

Psalm 91:9-12; Isaiah 43:1-2; Matthew 6:30-33; 1 Peter 3:13-14

What sort of protection from harm is being spoken of in these passages?

Can we claim God’s protection?

If so, in what circumstances?

Does that amount of protection we receive depend on our level of faith?

(5 mins)

The passage shows Jesus with his disciples in the midst of the storm. He only seems to remove the danger as a sign to them of his power rather than as what he would normally do in that situation.

3.      How might this picture be helpful to us in the situations that we might be in?

(In your discussion see if you can think of some examples

of how our ideas can be applied)
